Job description, work day and responsibilities

A Learning Technology Strategist helps organizations develop and execute a learning technology strategy that supports business goals, workforce capability, and organizational performance. As learning technologies continue to evolve from AI-powered learning tools to learning experience platforms, skills systems, analytics, and performance support organizations face increasingly complex decisions. In addition to the challenge of deciding which technologies to buy, they may be determining how technology should support the organization’s learning strategy, how different systems should work together, and where technology can create measurable business value. A Learning Technology Strategist brings the strategic perspective needed to answer those questions. They begin by understanding the organization’s business objectives, workforce needs, learning ecosystem, and technology maturity before recommending any solution. Sometimes the answer is new technology. Sometimes it’s better governance, stronger integrations, improved processes, or making better use of existing investments. Rather than focusing on individual platforms, Learning Technology Strategists help organizations build a technology strategy that aligns learning, technology, and business priorities. They assess the current learning technology ecosystem, identify opportunities and risks, develop future-state roadmaps, advise executive stakeholders, and help organizations make informed decisions about technology investments over time. Unlike an LMS Administrator who manages technology day-to-day, a Learning Technologist who supports implementation, or an Instructional Designer who focuses on content experiences, a Learning Technology Strategist works at the strategic planning level. They help organizations make long-term decisions about how their learning technology ecosystem should evolve to support business goals. This role is especially valuable during periods of significant change—such as AI adoption, digital transformation, or platform modernization—when organizations need senior-level strategic guidance but don’t require a permanent executive hire. On this page, you’ll learn what a Learning Technology Strategist does, when organizations typically engage one, how the role differs from related positions, what qualifications to look for, and why many organizations choose a fractional Learning Technology Strategist for strategic initiatives.
