"Preparation beats panic."

Great thread. Here's what I'm seeing actually move the needle in negotiations right now, based on client outcomes over the past few months:

  • Lead with market data, not personal need. Pull numbers from Levels.fyi, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn Salary for your specific metro and experience band. Saying "the market rate for this role in Austin is $118K–$132K" lands differently than "I was hoping for more."
  • Use the STAR frame for your counter. Situation: current offer. Task: close the gap. Action: present your data. Result: anchor the number you actually want, not your floor.
  • Negotiate the full package. Base is often the hardest line to move. Signing bonus, extra PTO, remote stipend, and accelerated review dates are frequently softer targets.
  • Silence is still your best tool. After stating your number, stop talking. Let them respond first.

Practical tip: When they say "this is our best offer," respond with "I appreciate that — can you help me understand the flexibility on the signing bonus or first review timeline?" It reframes without confrontation.

One thing I'm curious about for this group — are people finding that written offers are coming in lower than verbal conversations suggested? Seeing that pattern more lately and wondering if it's industry-specific.
